What is the Transition Nelson Transport Group aiming to do?
The Transport group are encouraging, promoting and developing sustainable transport options for the region.
Sustainable Transport Futures (STF) was formed in late 2007 in response to the Regional Transport Committee's (RTC) Transport Corridor Study. The purpose of STF is to promote:
• the use of non-fossil fuel transport modes;
• improved vehicle fuel efficiency;
• the increase in efficiency of the existing roading network.
STF now has representatives on both Council's new RTCs (regional transport committees) working to promote and embed these options into Regional Transport Strategies, including cycling and walking, car pooling, and a quality bus system for commuters.
Which projects is the Transport Group involved in?
STF are working with Tasman District Council to establish a commuter car pooling service from towns such as Mapua into Nelson, and have worked with Nelson City Council to improve their car pooling scheme. STF has strong links with local walking and cycling advocacy groups with members in these groups.
We would welcome anyone keen to be involved as we undertake a range of activities such as: helping out on stalls at local events; setting up local practical projects; lobbying local councils; writing media reports.
When do they meet? Who do I contact?
The Transport group meets as and when required. To join the Transport Group, attend the next meeting or find out more contact Katy Steele on 545 9176 or katysteele@nec.org.nz
