Why save seeds?
Seeds are a part of our heritage, and a connection with the food that we eat. Seed saving intends to support genetic diversity at a time when it is under threat. Years of monocultural modern farming practices have left us with fewer and fewer varieties of crops and a rapid decline in biodiversity worldwide. The time is ripe for learning how to save seed and hold a Nelson seed exchange.
What is the Transition Nelson Seed Savers Group aiming to do?
To strengthen and protect our local biodiversity which improves Nelson’s resilience by
• Collecting local seed for local conditions
• Co-ordinating seed saving and seed exchange within Nelson region
• Bringing together people with seed saving skills and those that want to learn
• Coordinating efforts with other existing Transition Nelson groups
Which projects are the Seed Savers Group involved in?
Some ideas for projects include:
• a seed guardianship scheme running in tandem with the Waimarama Gardens seed project & creation of seed beds
• germination and propagation workshops
• adopt a vegetable - create a local network of plant guardians
• grafting and pruning workshops
