What are No Dig Gardens?
No dig gardens are a system of organic gardening which require no digging to put in your initial garden or maintain it .Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? They really do work fantastically and not only require less maintenance but also preserve the vital ‘structure’ of your soil.
What is the Transition Nelson No Dig Gardening Group aiming to do?
The Group's aim is to encourage people to start or expand their own vegetable garden by:
1. Giving informative presentations on why to grow your own food and the advantages of the no dig gardening technique
2. Running workshops
Presentations and workshops are only available from November to April.
What projects are the No Dig Gardening group involved in?
1. Presentations
Food security refers to the access to and availability of sufficient food for a healthy active life. This includes nutrition, food safety, as well as the ability to acquire enough food. A convincing case is made for how community programs and backyard gardens can overcome today's challenges such as the distance food travels, toxins in food, soil contamination and the current recession.
2. No Dig Gardening Workshops
The two hour 'no dig gardening workshops' are run on Saturday afternoons in local communities by Bob Jones & Myk Rushton. Places are limited to 15 and there is a charge of $15.
3. DVD
With the help of local filmaker John Irwin, the group has produced a short film (12 mins) demonstrating the no dig gardening technique. This is now available for $15.
You can also watch a free 2 minute version of the technique on Youtube. It has been awarded a five star rating. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CriHmRpeP0
