Health Group

What is the Transition Nelson Health Group Aiming to do?
Our health care and systems are heavily dependent on fossil fuels (drugs, equipment, transportation, machinery, sterilisation, emergency services etc.) This group is looking at possible impacts and solutions for Nelson. Climate change also affects our healthcare with changing geographical spread of diseases and increased flooding and water contamination issues.

The Health Groups aims and objectives are to look at ways of making our Healthcare Systems more resilient. What would this look like?
-    Reduced oil vulnerability in all areas and less energy intensive approaches
-    Decentralised services
-    Priority of local sourcing of food and materials
-    Priority of disease prevention and health promotion

Which projects are the Health Group involved in?
Possible projects could include;
•    Establishing a free Integrated Health clinic of alternative therapies running on time koha from practitioners
•    Creating a space for knowledge interchange – gardening, vitamins, herbs, Farmers Market?
•    Creating a community wellness garden
•    Monitoring waterways
•    Initiating herbal knowledge night classes.
•    Exploring more localised provision of medicines, equipment and other necessities of good healthcare.
•    Establishing an Integrated Health Forum to encourage dialogue between alternative and mainstream medicine.
